How much webspace do I get?
We provide you an initial 25 MB of webspace. If you require more, then
contact us and we are often able to facilitate. We cannot normally provide
massive amounts of webspace for software or multi-media downloads, contact us
all the same as there are always exceptions to the rule.
What kind of server is my website hosted on?
We host all free websites on high quality Linux servers.
We constantly improve the specifications of our servers to meet the demands of
our web hosting clients. The service provided is often considered superior to
other paid for service providers.
Where is my website hosted?
The Linux servers on which your website is hosted are located at Telehouse in
London. Telehouse located in the Docklands provide some of the most advanced
power resilience, temperature control, fire detection systems and state of the
art physical security systems in the UK.
Can I sell my services/book/software from my website?
As long as they are legal, yes.
Can I run PHP scripts from my website?
Yes. You are free to use the php programming language, including the email
and other functions that it offers. We have not disabled or "crippled" the php
installation in any way.
Do I need to give my homepage any kind of special name?
Yes, for people to be able to see your website you must call the homepage
index.htm or index.html
Can I use FTP to upload files?
Ye, in fact you have to use the FTP protocol to upload files. As a student
you are entitled to use the "WS-FTP LE" software for free.

I am an absolute beginner how do I create my first web
page?
If you don't want to learn HTML - the language web pages are written in and
simply want to get a web page/s up quickly there is a variety of software
available.
If you have Netscape or Internet Explorer installed you already have an easy web
editor included with the software.
Most Universities have Microsoft Word installed and you can use this to create
web pages.
We recommend you try one of the following packages, all of which are free and
suitable for absolute novices:

How do I add a page counter to my webpages?
Simply add the following code to your web page:

Yes you can, however all downloads must be initiated from your website. In
other words no linking to images or downloads from other websites.
Can I use your server to store images that are called
from another website/server?
No. Not only is it not allowed it is not possible. If you try and bypass our
security to steal our bandwidth we are likely to take any number of actions:
- hijack the link and use it to promote our services
- delete your web space and account without notice
- prosecute for bandwidth theft
- anything else we see fit at that point in time!
Why are peoples links to my website not working
properly?
People must link to your homepage.
We do not permit deep linking for a number of security reasons. As we provide
the web space free of charge we cannot have the space we have allocated you
abused. This means you cannot use it as a repository for software, images, or
other content that you wish to call from another website.
Do you provide a CGI-BIN
No, we do not provide a cgi-bin as this could potentially be abused by users
and put an unfair strain on the system. Everything that can be done in CGI can
easily be done in PHP, which we do support.

Can I get a real domain name to point to my site?
Yes. For a small fee we can register you a domain name that automatically
forwards to your website.
However you are not permitted to point a domain name not registered through us
to your website. We have disabled the ability for you to do this. If you try and
bypass this you will be considered in breach of our AUP.

Are there any games I can add to my website?
Yes there are a massive number of games available you can install on your

Do you display popup advertising on my website?
No as we consider this too intrusive. We place no advertisements on any of
your websites.
Can I use JavaScript on my website?
Yes.

What will my web address be?
The address of you web pages will depend on your username. All pages will
start off with http://university.co.uk/~ then your username (the first part of
your email address).
For example if you username was username then the address of your web space
would be http://university.co.uk/~username/
My username and password don't work...
Make sure you are using your correct FTP username. This is different to your
email username and would have been supplied to you on signup.
Both the username and password are case sensitive.
How do I publish my website using my Internet Explorer 5
browser?
Internet Explorer has an interface for transferring your files or web pages
by FTP.
It is very easy to use.
Open Internet Explorer 5.
Enter the following address into the Address field:
ftp://your_username@ftp.pobox.co.uk, where your_username is the FTP username
provided when you registered. Remember this is case sensitive and different to
your email username.
Once the connection is established with the server, go to the window that opens
and enter your login and password (the login you already entered in the FTP
address in step 2, and the password you created when registering).
The content of your account is displayed in the Internet Explorer window.
Simply add HTML files and directories by dragging and dropping from the window
of your PC to the Internet Explorer window.
Remember to call your homepage index.htm or index.html
I cant see my website when I go to my web address..
Make sure the homepage is called index.htm or index.html
This has to all be in lowercase letters, as shown above.
How do I configure WS_FTP LE software?
First launch WSFTP by choosing it from the programs menu then:
- In Profile field enter "University.co.uk"
- In the "Host Name/Address" field enter "ftp.pobox.co.uk"
- Leave "Host Type" as "Automatic Detect"
- In the "USER ID" enter your FTP username provided on signup - this is
different to your email username and is case sensitive.
- In the "Password" field enter your password (same as email password - this too
is case sensitive)
- Tick the "Save Password" box if you do not want to keep re-entering it every
time you connect.
- Leave "Account" and "Comments" fields blank
- Click "OK"
- You are now connected to the the webserver.
- Below the two panes you will see three options, Ascii, Binary and a square
checkbox entitled "Auto" ensure you tick this box.
- You can drag and drop files into the right hand pane to upload your content.
If you have already checked the "auto" box files should be uploaded in the
correct format. Sometimes you need to force PHP and SHTM files in ascii mode, to
do this check the "Ascii" option.
- Images, software and other multimedia shoudl be uploaded in binary format.
- Make sure your homepage is named index.htm or index.html
- The left hand pane is similar to windows explorer you can use this to navigate
your computer and find a whole series of files and folders you want to uplaod.
Simply Highlight the files you want to upload and click the arrow that points
right to upload your files.

What is web hosting?
Web hosting refers to the process of publishing a web site so that it is
available to the world to see live on the Web.
Do you offer FrontPage extensions?
No, however this does not stop you using FrontPage or FrontPage express to
design and upload your website. You cannot use the built in scripts though, such
as contact forms. You can use PHP for most of these functions instead.
Do you offer a database?
No, we are not at this point in time able to provide you with a database. In
future we may be able to for a small fee.

No, this would be too intensive. The best we can do is recommend the services
of a professional web designer, which is probably inappropriate. We suggest you
