address in the "LOGIN" field and the password you chose in the "PASSWORD" field
on the entry box.
Your browser will open a new window with your webmail.
How much storage space do I get for my email?

services we will not reject your email nor delete attachments because you have
gone over a limit imposed by us.
Can web mail operate in languages other than English?
Yes. We have tried to ensure our system can provide web mail in as many
languages as possible to cater for international students. Currently we support
over 30 languages including:
Bulgarian, Brazilian Portuguese, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Deutsch,
Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian,
Italian, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Nynorsk, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese,
Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish.
How do I view web mail in a language other than English?
We currently support over 30 languages. To change your preference simply
choose the "options" and then the "display preferences" menu when you login to
web mail.
How can the web mail system help me avoid spam?
All email on our system is scanner by our fantastic Anti Spam filters.
Messages with a certain probability of being spam are marked *SPAM* in the
subject line so that you can filter these mails out. Messages above
another threshold are rejected entirely. If you see a message flagged you can
find out why it was flagged by viewing the message source.
When you login into web mail choose options and then "spam filters". You are
then able to choose which spam filters you would like to apply.
If you click on the name of the filter you will be given the opportunity to read
detailed information about that particular service. We recommend you apply no
more than 3 types of spam filter at a time, otherwise you will seriously slow
your connection.
We recommend the SpamCop filter, SpamCop is aggressive and often errs on the side
of blocking mail that could potentially be spam.
You are able to choose whether spam mail is automatically deleted or placed in a
separate folder.
We recommend you send all potential spam to a folder called "spam" check these
at regular intervals to make sure legitimate email has not been treated as spam.
In this way you will never lose an important message.
Do you protect me against getting a virus?
We run a comprehensive anti virus program, scanning ALL email in and out of
our servers. Your university will likely run anti-virus programs as well,
so you should confident that while obviously we cannot guarantee the safety of
your mail, we have taken every possible precaution to try and keep it safe and
clean.
Most email virus target the Outlook Express email system which means the webmail
system will remain unaffected. However whenever you receive attachments to
e-mail messages ensure you recognise the sender and are expecting to receive
such an attachment before opening or downloading it.
If you are using a pc at home we recommend you install anti-virus software, one
of the leading providers is Mcafe - http://www.mcafee.com/ you can also download
free anti-virus software from Grisoft - http://www.grisoft.com
Remember, regardless of your protection to ensure safety, we recommend that you
never, ever open attachments or website links from unknown sources.
How secure and private is my email?
We use the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to protect your communications between
the computer you use and us. SSL is the industry standard for secure connection
on the Web. The primary use for SSL is the transmission of sensitive information
over the Internet. When you have a secure connection between your browser and a
Web site, no one else can easily access the data that you send across the
connection. It is the same method used for encrypting your credit card details
when shopping online.
University.co.uk uses SSL to encrypt your sign-in name and password when you
sign in we also go further than other providers as once you are logged in all
other communication, including the receiving and sending of email is also
encrypted with SSL to give you a high level of security and privacy.
We do not monitor, edit, or disclose the contents of your email unless required
to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to:
(1) conform to the the law or comply with legal process served on us
(2) only under extreme circumstances we may act to protect the personal safety
of our system, users or the general public.
(3) in the case flagrant breaches of our Acceptable Usage Policy it is required
to ascertain further information
How can I check home, work or other email?
You can access any POP e-mail account from the University.co.uk webmail
system.
The POP-Mail option allows you to retrieve messages from up to ten POP e-mail
accounts. You can check e-mail from your company, your Internet service provider
(ISP), and your university - all from your web mail account.
Once logged in choose "options" and then "POP Mail Accounts" you can then enter
the details of your other accounts that you wish to retrieve the email from. The
settings will be the ones provided by your ISP or University Administrator.

Yes you can. We recommend you limit the size of attachments to 3 megabyte
unless you have a particularly fast internet connection (such as broadband ADSL
or ISDN 128k).

able to add appointments and other important dates to your online diary.
What are the settings for collecting email with my usual
software?
If you already know how to create an additional email account with your usual
client email software then you will just need the following information:
POP3/IMAP Server: pop3.pobox.co.uk imap.pobox.co.uk
SMTP Server: smtp.pobox.co.uk
Unless you use the dialup that we provided you with for free when you signed up
you will need to enable the "Outgoing authentication" option (not SSL), refer to
your user manual for details.
Alternatively we have provided step-by-step instructions in the "Email Help"
area of the website for the most popular email clients.
Do you provide access to newsgroups?
No, unfortunately newsgroup access has been withdrawn.
Alternatively you may want to try a web based service such as http://news.interbulletin.com/
or http://news.google.com/
Do you support/what is IMAP?
Yes we use the latest version IMAP4. This method of collecting email is
superior to POP3 as messages are left on the server even after downloading and
reading them.
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a method of accessing
electronic mail or bulletin board messages that are kept on a a mail server. In
other words, it permits a "client" email program to access remote message stores
as if they were local. For example, email stored on an IMAP server can be
manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a workstation at university, and a
notebook computer while travelling, without the need to transfer messages or
files back and forth between these computers.

What is and do you support POP3 email?
POP3 offers an alternative to the webmail client for collecting email.
POP3 is the latest Post Office Protocol 3, this is a service that stores and
serves emails for various client machines that are not connected to the Internet
24 hours a day. Emails are held in POP3 until you log in, once you have
downloaded them however they are deleted from the server.
For this reason we recommend using the far superior IMAP protocol.
Microsoft Outlook Express email software supports both POP3 and IMAP.
